However, this period also marks a tremendous advance in many different technologies and practices during the exploration of Orion&#39;s Arm which set it apart from the <a class="internal" href="/wiki/Net-Ages">Net Ages</a> which preceded it. The Great Expansion came to an abrupt end with the occurrence of <a class="internal" href="/wiki/The-Plague">The Plague</a> and its aftermath.</p>

It is broken up into the period that begins with the invention the transistor during the mid 20th century until the end of the internet in the late 21st century. The second age occurs when the internet is superseded by the quantum net in the early 22nd century which permits communication over vast distances and is seen as a more secure system for telecommunications as humans expand their interplanetary economies until the advent of <a class="internal" href="/wiki/superluminal-transit">superluminal transit</a> and the <a class="internal" href="/wiki/Great-Expansion">Great Expansion</a>.</p>

• The Scape

Programs are composed of sub-programs, like a giant interconnected web of APIs, to create the outputs they are designed to create. These services create an ecosystem of data and functions in which individual identities emerge as the coalescence of routines which simulate intent and meaningfulness, engaged in activity with the rest of the system. </p>

• The Serene Systems

It begins with the settlements at the end of the <a class="internal" href="/wiki/Warring-Lords">Warring Lords</a> period and the establishment of a number of enduring interstellar institutions such as the <a class="internal" href="/wiki/Council-of-Governors">Council of Governors</a> and the <a class="internal" href="/wiki/Order-of-Mercury">Order of Mercury</a> and lasted nearly as long as all the other <a class="internal" href="/wiki/Historical-Periods">Historical Periods</a> combined.</p>

• The Warring Lords Period

Along the <a class="internal" href="/wiki/Cygnus-Line">Cygnus Line</a>, most immortal lords found themselves caught up in the <a class="internal" href="/wiki/Three-Wars-of-Luther">Three Wars of Luther</a>, leading to the end of many political dynasties, countless deaths and nearly half of all immortals either dying or forced into exile.</p>
