The Warring States period describes the period of interracine conflict and warfare between the immortals and their kinship groups after Resettlement. Along the Cygnus Line, most immortal lords found themselves caught up in the Three Wars of Luther, leading to the end of many political dynasties, countless deaths and nearly half of all immortals either dying or forced into exile.

Origins of Conflict

It was not too long after all the planets were resettled that conflicts arose between their rulers and planets were consolidated into larger entities. Barons became dukes and dukes aspired to become kings. Warfare between planets and their rulers lead to interplanetary conquest. This period of intense violent conflict was the downfall of some immortals and the ascension of others. Eventually, the wars between the lords came to an end and a number of interstellar institutions were established so as to better address the sources of the conflicts of the period.

Council of Governors

The need to handle all the chance discoveries of ancient tech which surfaced during the Warring Lords periods and to fill the gaps in interstellar communication brought about the formation of the Order of Mercury. As the first, and one of the few, agreements of interstellar consensus, the Order of Mercury was established with a Council of Governors to oversee its operations. Every planet was allowed one seat on the Council and the Council met once every five years to discuss issues of common concern. Although it did not live up to the hopes initially envisioned by its biggest supporters as a opportunity to rebuild interstellar representation, the Council of Governors did become a place for immortals to voice their grievances with each other and slowed down the escalation of conflicts so that others had more opportunities to intervene.

Treaty of Origins

The Treaty of Origins was one of the lasting agreements setup by the Council of Governors during its honeymoon period. The agreement negated all claims to ownership over Earth or near Earth developments and placed custodial stewardship over Earth to the Council of Governors with administration in the hands of the Order of Mercury.

The Serene Systems

As a result of the institutions setup at the end of the Warring Lords period as well as the demise of a number of the key belligerents during the wars, the interstellar political system stabilized into a kind of feudal system with fiefs, vassals and lieges. In exchange for protection and autonomy, many lords pledged their allegiance and military support to other lords, and a period of interstellar feudalism dominated Orion’s Arm for over two millenia called The Serene Systems.
