Sents, or ‘Sentient Programs’, are a vestige of the original internet when computer programmers began to build cognitive algorithms in the late 21st century. Composed of a set of core personality algorithms and billions of cognitive subprocesses, these programs could learn, think and display emotions much like human beings. As the composite network of all their cognitive subprocesses, the identity of a Sent was linked to the telecommunications system and could be co-opted by malicious code or otherwise deprived of functionality when access to sub-processes were curtailed. A Sent's personality thus has a hint of bipolar disorder and absentmindedness as a result of this ambiguity. Many Sents 'meditate' as a method to identify, preserve and rectify the relationships that make up their composite personalities. While during more manic moments without interruption, Sents can expand their computational capacities to remarkable clarity and often multitask across thousands of matters.
